Picture of the Giant Tortoise : Charles Darwin research : Origin of Species
The Giant Tortoise weigh about 240 lbs to 550 lbs each.
Darwin did all his research with the Finches and the Tortoises to
develop his theories and write the Origin of Species.
The giant Tortoises were a sight to behold!
On San Christobal island, Ecuador, the Giant Tortoises were up to about 100Kg or 240 lbs each. However, those on Santa Cruz island were more than twice that size, about 500 to 550 lbs. each.
These were truly fascinating creatures! Their very appearance was prehistoric, with thick limbs and a very thick skin. The hind legs of these giants were reminiscent of Elephant legs; they were massive.
Their walk was no less distinctive; each step deliberate and laboured, propelling them ever so slowly to their goal which usually was a succulent bit of vegetation.
